An American friend reckons the whole of Australia goes on holidays from Melbourne Cup Day until after Australia Day! While I know that’s not true, there is a little bit of truth in it, and we need to be careful that this time of year and the way we feel doesn’t lead us to waste the first quarter of the New Year.
Here’s what might happen – we break for the Christmas / New Year period. Some staff come back to work in early January, some mid, some late. When everyone is back, it’s all hands on deck catching up and before we know it, it’s late February and the year is already getting away from us. Even if we do slow down, take stock and do some planning, it might be the end of March before we put any new plans in place, and
we have just wasted the first 3 months of 2020!
Here’s how to avoid that.
1. Commit to a process where you will develop a strategic plan. This means giving everyone advance notice of when and how you will do this. Typically I use the approach of asking – where are we now? Where do we want to be? How are we going to get there?
2. Commit to you being a better leader in 2020. Many people find partnering with an expert mentor gives them the challenge and accountability to step it up.
3. Engage your leadership team by bringing them together and talking about becoming better as individuals and as a team. Our Becoming Better Leaders workshop is just the opportunity.
